Evaluation Question Four

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Research

When we first started to look at different songs we could choose for our music video; we started to research on youtube through different music video's where we would look at different artsist and their songs. To see if we could choose a song from this and get ideas form the video itself. This is where we found the list of song choices we had to coose between. Youtube helped because we would not have found our final song and the ideas from different music videos.

Also we just looked on google images into the style of the artist; Michelle Branch because the style of the artist has to match the genre of the song. Researching into this helped us find the style of our artist; skinny jeans and dark make-up.

Planning

After we had finished researching the song and artsist we had chosen, we needed to use the media technology; Blogger. To plan our own music video on. Stating when we would be filming, the research we had done and different ideas involving our music video and ancillary tasks. In my case; there are two lots of planning on my blog due to the change of song choice because the first choice didn't work out so well.

Construction

When constructing our music video, digipacks and adverts we had to use a range of different media technologies. To edit our music videos we used Imovie HD. Which gave us the technology to upload our footage from a camera and edit it. Making it so we could add in different tranisitions, cut clips down and add in new effects.

When we were actually filming our music video, we used a normal video camera. Where would be go to different locations and play the song in the background and capture different footage.

For my digipack and advert, we used my sisters camera that looks a lot like this one. We used this to take pictures so we could upload them on to the computer and edit them.

When I upoladed the pictures onto the computer, the construction process was still going on because I began to add effects the photo's I had chosen to be in/on my digipack and advert. I also added text into them as well. To make them look very real and professional.

Evaluation

After doing all of the researching, planning and construction we knew we needed to evaluate our main product and ancillary tasks. I have used two media technologies to evaluate all three of my media products.

The first one was; Prezi. Where we had to create a presentation stating all of the questions that are on this blog. Just adding bullet points and images, then we had to present this in class.

The second one was; Blogger. This blog is answering an evaluation for example. I am posting all of the evaluation questions and answers on my blog in different posts.

Evaluation Question Three

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

When trying to get feedback on our work we recieved a lot from our class after our first draft of the music video. With the ancillary tasks I recieved feedback after it was all done, so anything that i learn, that might be negative; I will say it would be what I will improve next time when creating and editing work like this. Now the easiest way to get feedback on our digipacks and adverts were to post the pictures on facebook. The only bad point about this would be; the feedback would be byast because the comments would be from friends. Though I did ask them to be as honest as they could.

Digipack

This is the feedback I recieved from my digipack:

The first comment is saying it looks professional, so I asked them what I could improve on and he said maybe to change the colour of the songs on the song page because it is hard to read on the orange and white background. Another postive point was the colours, the audience seemed to like my autumn colour scheme that I have used on my digipack. From the feedback; the only improvement I would make would be the colour of the songs so the audience would find it a lot easier to read.

Advert

I also posted my advert for the album on facebook to recieve feedback. A lot more people seemed to like the advert more than the digipack because of the nature of the photo. The pose seems to be the main positive point that most people point out. This is what the feedback said:

All together six people liked the overall photo. Most of these people said what they liked about the photo and what they thought I should improve. Two people said that I should have gold stars instead of just the words and have it rated at, at least four stars. Which I will next time when doing work like this. Jodi also said that this advert goes very well with our music video due to the artist's overall look. Though another person said they did like the use of Q rated it... but two people said it didn't work as good as it could so I would change it next time. Alex said that she noticed that the picture and the artist resembled sadness and love which is what the song is all about. Which is good to know that the image has come accross well and the audience has taken it well. Lauren said that maybe to make the Q statement a bit bigger like everyone else she liked this part of the advert and to sharpen the hands to make them not so blurry. Which is a good idea to make the image a whole lot sharper and noticeable. The last toe people said that they thought it was very proffessional and liked the colour use, also to maybe change the background a bit because you cant see the O in out. All of the feedback is very good and has made me see what I would change or improve.

Music Video

A few months ago I posted the feedback from the class on our music video. This is the link to the blog post: http://adeyleigha2media.blogspot.com/2011/01/music-video-feedback.html

We had time to make improvements on a lot of the negative points we recieved about our music video. The main negative points we recieved from the feedback was; the shakey camera shots and some of the shots were a bit too long. So we changed this in our music video. Filming some more singing parts; making them not so shakey anymore and cutting the clips down in editing. So the audience could relate to it a lot mor, growing a lot more understanding as well. Though we improved these negative points, there were a lot of positive points that they pointed out as well. They liked the use of our storyline; including the notes and mirror scene. A lot of the audience also thought our editing was very good as well, espcially the scene we slowed down where the artist is running.

This is what I have learnt form the feedback we have recieved. For the music video we did have time to change the things the audience thought needed to be improved. For the digipack and advert however; the improvements couldn't be done because I ran out of time. Though the positive feedback reflects that ther improvements aren't really needed.

Evaluation Question Two

How effective is the combination of our main product and acillary texts? When looking at the main product which is the music video and the ancillary texts which are my digipack and advert the combination is very affective when looking at the mise-en scene particluarly. Mise-en-scene. For our music video; the mise-en-scene we used was in a field with a lot of fog. Giving a mysterious, natural and earthy feel to the whole video and the artist herself. Also the autumn colours of brown, orange and green also obviously showed up in the video. In my digipack this is what I have gone for. I have used an image of trees and added an effect. This goes very well with the overall layout and image of the artist. The music video corresponds with the digipack because of the mise-en-scene. Also as I have said, the colours as well. The colour scheme in the video is full with autumn colours, the digipack is also full of these as well. Corresponding to the artists indie, earthy and natural look. One that that the combination between my music video and advert is effective would be the close-ups. In our music video we use a lot of close-ups which really give the appeal of the artsist because it looks like they have demanded close-ups like madonna's record company do. So we can see a lot more of the artists image.

Evaluation Question One.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

Music Video

When looking at our music video for Michelle Branch's song: Everywhere and Michelle's orginal music video; we have indeed challenged, used and developed certain areas of the original media product. When we started planning our music video, we had to do some research into the songs genre and the artist that would be singing it's image. So we noticed looking at Michelle's video that the artist needed to look like a indie rocker. We wanted to develop and use this image in the music video by giving our artist the same dark make-up as she had. Just some eyeliner around the eyes. Though in terms of clothes we challenged the original video becuase they used darker colours. We used bright colours; where the artist was wearing a multicoloured top and blue jeans. We wanted to challenge this because though we wanted her to look like a rocker, we wanted to show the indie and bright side to her as well. So we didn't 'copy' the original video and it had a sense of softness about the artist too. We also challenged the whole colour scheme of the music video. When looking at Michelle's music video it has a dark sense to it, there is not a lot of colour around. We wanted to challenge this because we wanted a lot of colour because we wanted to make our singer look different to the orginal singer. Also because our singer is blonde and much lighter colours match with her overall, Michelle is brunette and darker colours match her skin tone. In michelle's music video, we noticed quite a lot of it was filmed inside. We didn't want to do this because we didn't have the resources and surroundings that Michelle did, it wouldn't look as well done as her's does. Michelle is in a tall building, looking over New York. How could we campare to that? Our mise-en-scene is completely different to hers because we filmed it in a flim with a lot of fog around. We loved the fog and so did our class. We challenged the mise-en-scene for a few reasons because one; we couldn't get a flat in New York and two; we thought the surroundings would make the artist look more edgy and though she has a soft side, she is also edgy as well. Though most of Michelle's is filmed inside, there are some scene's outside as well. We have used a convention from Michelle's video which we though would go quite well with the song and our overall video. This was a running scene where the artist is looking for the boy that she can never find. We used this scene also the effect used as well. Which was to slow it down as well. We also conformed to the original media product because we used a lot of close-ups, showing the emotion in the artists face.

Digipack

This is Michelle Branch's real media product:

This is my digipack:

As you can see I have used and developed the colour scheme of the digipack. The autumn colours went very well with the artists overall look. Though my digipack challenged the original product's conventions because I did not use all of the digipack space for a picture of the artist. This is so I could make the digipack look more creative like the artists look.

In the process of creating our evaluation presentation.

We are very near finishing our evaluation presentation. Though we are having trouble uploading the pictures of our digipacks and adverts of our artists on to the presentation. Every time we try to upload the pictures, we need a password to upload them. We have seen the techinicians and there is nothing they can do to help. So we will need to upload these pictures from home; we cannot do it at school. Apart from this, we are very nearly there with our presentation.

Starting our evaluation!

Today we have been starting our evaluation presentations on Prezi, we have been given the four evaluation questions.

Thursday, 17 March 2011

We did some re-filming and final editing.

Today we have done some re-filming. We did not think we needed any more singing clips because we already have the whole song sung the whole way through. We just needed a few clips here and there of the artist in genereal. When we went in search of something to film; Lysette had a good idea of holding the camera up and spinning around. Looking at the trees, the trees are starting to blossom so it did look quite nice. We did not need much else, we just filmed a few shots here and there of myself (the artist) smelling flowers so we could use shots like thesr to fill the gaps. When it came down to editing the last few bits. It took a lot of hard work because everything needed to be exactely in sync. The first clip we needed; needed to be 44 seconds long and we added the clips of the trees in here. Though it was very long, we slowed it down and just cut it a bit. We made sure it went along with the first verse of instrumental notes at the beginning. We noticed that we did not have a lot of tranisitions in the editing or effects. So as we were adding new clips in we were adding in different transitions like fading in and out, black and white and slowing down or speeding the clips up.

Editing what we already have.

Today we have been editing our music video. As I have said the first 44 seconds we have got rid of and are going to re film. The last scene we are also going to replace. Though we have got the footage that we need for this, from filming originally. So we edited in the last scene and made it suit well with the rest of our footage. We also had a few clips that we added in. Like when the artist was looking in the mirror; we added in quite a long clips on this but we thought it went quite nicely with a similar clip a few clips after it. We also added in a few clips of the artist singing; we didn't have to re-film these because they were already good enough.

Tuesday, 15 March 2011

We need to re-film or edit this...

Looking at the music video. There are exactley 44 seconds of footage that we are going to replace at the beginning. This is because these are the scenes where the class said it was very shakey. We talked to our teacher and she said that a particular part of our video was good but it would be better if it was filmed a different way. The scene where the camera shows a close-up of myself the singer, it focuses on the eyes and the lips and is quite shakey. Though we quite like it the way it is, our teacher felt it would be better a different way. Being shot individually, making it not as shakey. We quite like it how it is already but when we come around to it we will make our minds up then. Also in the last 43 seconds we will repalce the footage because they are very shakey as well.

Monday, 14 March 2011

Looking back at our music video.

Today we have been looking at our music video and what we will have to change or re-film. We obviously want to edit the video so the lips are perfectely in sync. We are not sure if we are going to re-film some of the singing parts, this is because we have a lot of singing parts filmed already we just didn't use them when we first completed the video. We have also decided that at the beginning and the end of the video some of the shots are quite shakey. So we are going to look at what we have got and if we can use what we had originally. Tomorrow i will be blogging what we need to re-film or add in.

Digi pack, advert and music video; Going back to our work to make improvements and changes.

Key:

Level 1: Minimal

Level 2: Basic

Level 3: Proficient

Level 4: Excellent

Today we have been looking back at our digipacks and music video's to see what we can change to achieve the best marks we can get. To see what area we are most lacking in. We have been given a marking criteria for our music video's, adverts and digipacks. This is for the construction; It consists of; 40 production marks for the main task which is the music video and 10 marks each for the ancillary tasks which are the digipacks and adverts.

When looking at the marking criteria for the course work on the whole there are four areas with different marking schemes. The first area is the for 'the presentation of the research' which is the blog; this is worth 20 marks and split up into four levels as the others are.

The second area is worth 40 marks. This is for the construction of the music video and looks at things like; holding shots steady and editing well.

The third area is worth; 10 marks. This is the contruction of the digipacks and adverts (posters). This are looks at our ICT use and camera skills.

The last area is worth; 20 marks. This is the Evaluation of everything that we have produced.

Music Video: Feedback

(First of all in the music video on youtube it has made the lip syncing very out of sync because it has moved the clips.)

Today in class we looked at everyones music videos and gave eachother feedback. I have to say that all of the groups music videos are very good! When we looked at ours Mrs Howlett gave us some feedback as well. The main thing that she brought up was that some of the clips were a bit too long. She suggested maybe we put these long clips in here because we didn't have enough footage to use. Our teacher also said that maybe we used a bit too many tracking shots and panning along with other shots. All together my group (myself and Lysette) got 7 feedback sheets back for our music video.

Feedback sheet no.1

  • Really good lip syncing and mise-en-scene.
  • Like the use of the notes- good storyline.
  • Close up of mouth bit wobbly.
  • Like the camera angles/ tracking.
  • Good effect with fog and followable storyline.

Feedback sheet no.2

The fog gave a really good effect, liked the scene where Ade was looking in the mirror. Lip syncing needs editing and a bit more footage needed but the footage you've got is good. Like the use of notes.

Feedback sheet no.3
  1. Shots were a tad shaky: P
  2. Nice framing: P
  3. Variety of shots- a tiny bit long: P
  4. Like the material- the notes (really liked that): P
  5. Good mise-en-scene: P
  6. Editing-liked the running: P
  7. Variety shot transitions: P
  8. Synchronised well: P

(In class our teacher gave us a markscheme on how to mark eachother. The three levels are; Basic, Proficient and Excellent.)

Feedback sheet no.4

I liked the storyline. It fitted well within the song. Good shots- some a little too long.

Feedback sheet no.5

  • Two clips were too long.
  • The fog went well with the music video.
  • Liked the notes and the message on the mirror.
  • Needed more to the storyline though but overall good.

Feedback sheet no.6

  • Liked the setting and fog in the field.
  • Some shots went on for too long.
  • Liked the idea of the post stick notes.
  • Used variety of shots.
  • Some variety of shots.
  • Some framing of shots were off.
  • Lip syncing was near enough to perfect throughout.
  • Shots were steady in most of the video.

Feedback sheet no.7

  1. B-P; some shakey shots
  2. P-E
  3. P
  4. P
  5. P-E
  6. B
  7. B-P
  8. P

(REFER BACK TO FEEDBACK SHEET NO.3 TO SEE THE LEVELS AND AREAS OF THE MUSIC VIDEO.)

The singer was very good and I liked the post-its and the story. Some shots were a bit long and also some problems with editing, some clips were cut short.
